The rapid population growth and increase in world demand for seafood is already causing a rapid decrease in some wild stock population.
The UN addressed farming the ocean as one of the five priorities in 2019 for climate change! Fish farming creates significantly less greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) than typical animal agriculture.
It uses less fresh water and feed to produce the same amount of food compared to many other kinds of farming.
Our Atlantic salmon and Rainbow trout are very much in demand in Canada and abroad!
While Atlantic Halibut wild stocks are decreasing globally, our Farmers of the Sea have been developing and expanding Halibut culture over the last decade, creating more sustainable ways to enjoy this fish!
Finfish farming on PEI is entirely land-based! By raising our finfish in carefully monitored, land-based fish farms, growers are able to create disease- and contaminants-free environments, eliminating the need for antibiotics and chemicals and minimizing the waste.
And just as in the wild, the fish is able to swim naturally while remaining safe!
On the other hand, the shellfish doesn’t require any feed and serves as a natural filter for our ocean, naturally cleaning our waters.
