Fruits and veggies are an important part of a healthy diet. There are many things that we call vegetables when we’re cooking, but biologically speaking, many of those are actually a fruit! There are some pretty common ones that most people know about, but there are some more surprising fruits that we regularly catch masquerading as veggies. Celery is a vegetable because we eat the stems of the plant. While the celery juice craze is based on pseudo-science, celery is a healthy vegetable. Its high water content can help us stay hydrated, and has a low glycemic index, so it helps evenly regulate blood sugar. Celery is also loaded with vitamin C!

Cucumbers are a fruit, because they grow from the flower of a plant, and contain seeds inside. Cucumbers technically belong to the Cucurbit family of fruits, which means they’re cousins to gourds, like pumpkins and squashes!

Bell peppers are a fruit because the seeds are contained inside the flesh of the fruit. Sometimes we call them “sweet peppers” because bell peppers are the only fruit in the pepper family that does not produce capsaicin, which is what makes hot peppers hot!

Potatoes are a vegetable, because we eat the root, just like beets. In spite of their high starch content, potatoes are often called the near-perfect food, because they are 99.9% fat-free and packed with vitamins B6, C, E, K, and essential minerals like potassium, magnesium and phosphorous. Potatoes are grown in all 50 states, and they were the first veggie grown in space!
