In 2022, Bengaluru received the highest amount of rainfall in a decade. Due to lack of adaptability for such extreme weather events due to climate change, the city was brought to a standstill. The loss caused to IT companies in the Outer Ring Road area of the city alone amounted to 225 crores.
In terms of areas prone to drought, Karnataka is next only to Rajasthan – 54 per cent of the State’s geographical area is drought prone, which is about 88 of 176 taluks and 18 of 30 districts. The state has suffered more than 15 drought years over the last two decades.

“Karnataka Renewable Energy Policy 2022-2027” has an objective to facilitate the development of 10 (Ten) GW of additional renewable energy projects, including up to 1GW of Rooftop solar PV projects. This would reduce the CO2 emission by about 6 lakh tonnes and avoid the generation of around 454 MW of energy through fossil fuels.

The Department of Science and Technology released the Climate Vulnerability Assessment for Adaptation Planning in India during 2019-2020. Out of the 19 indicators used for district-level assessment for Karnataka most correlated negatively, with vulnerability driven by the three above mentioned factors in most districts.
Karnataka has 38,730 sq km of forest cover which is roughly 20% of its total geographical area, according to the India State of Forest Report 2021. Karnataka has suffered economic losses of Rs 3,800 crore due to depleting forest cover in the past six years, and these have been caused mainly by forest land conversion for non-forest purposes.
