Following the attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first US president to use an armoured vehicle when the Secret Service seconded a Cadillac with bulletproof glass from the Treasury Department, which had seized the car from infamous gangster Al Capone when he was arrested in 1932 for income tax-evasion. It was used until the rest of the current presidential fleet was armour-plated in early 1942.
