What medium should your story be written in?
Putting together a new story? Want to try a new medium? Unsure if your current one works? Take this quiz to find out what medium best suits you!
What do you tend to focus more on when you plan/ write this story?
physical actions taking place by characters
dialogue between characters
imagery of the scene and the reactions of the characters
careful selection of vocabulary
emotions and lessons in the story
What do you currently have done on this project?
nothing yet, it's just an idea
characters and some dialogue pieces
notes about the lore and functions of the world
strong one-liners heavy in emotion and visceral imagery
outline of how the story should go. Still fuzzy about which direction I want to head into.
What do you want your audience to get out of your piece?
A sense of accomplishment and completion on either the story or one of it's main ideas
I want them to cry/laugh/get angry with the narrator/characters
I want them to be able to see the vision I have in my head when I picture my story.
I want my audience to stay in suspense and on the edge of their seats.
I want them to enjoy the story being told and connect with the characters
What are you having the most problems with right now?
Where my characters are in each scene and their reactions to one another.
The surrounding imagery. I focus too much on the characters.
Balancing the amount of prose with the amount of dialogue.
Hitting the write emotions and finding the right way to say them.
Getting my audience interested in the story and its complexity.
If you were to try another medium or work with someone who knows how, what medium would you choose?
Comic or graphic novel
A play, TV show, or even a movie
A novel (or series of)
Poetry
an online or table-top game
Comic/ graphic novel
Your work is heavily based in imagery and would benefit from actual pictures for the readers to see. The story has enough room for action and emotion and the best way to portray this is adding a bit more art to your master-piece!
Performance/ script
You just might be the next Lin-Manual Miranda! In all seriousness, your work might be a bit too dialogue heavy for written prose. It also seems like your work, through your writer's lens, is much more three dimensional and would benefit from stage set-ups or even specific camera angles
Novel
There's nothing wrong with the classics! You are set up for a wonderful novel (or maybe even a series of them). Your prose is succinct, yet discernable. Make sure your dialogue keeps up with you and you're on your way to the Best Seller list!
Poetry
Emotions, imagery, complex ideas - you cannot be contained by mere prose alone! Your work would benefit from a bit of experimenting, maybe a bit or rhyming, or a particular poetic form.
RPG or any coded game
Pulling your audience into your story just isn't enough. They need to be IMMERSED in all its glory! Consider using this as an opportunity to make a table top DnD drama, or a streamable game. This might sound like a lot, but as long as you focus on the story before you get to the programming, the rest will feel like a piece of cake!
