The answer is 20 years.
The average single use plastic bag takes around 20 years to degrade in landfill. This doesn’t mean the plastic disappears - it will slowly break down into smaller pieces of plastic during this time. Next time you head to the shops or supermarket, take your own reusable bag and avoid plastic bags.
The answer is 1.8 billion.
1.8 billion coffee cups are used and disposed of in Australia each year, with nearly all of these ending up in landfill or as litter in our environment. So why not switch to a reusable cup! If you buy one coffee each day, that’s 365 disposable cups you’re avoiding each year.
The answer is the one you already have!
Some people buy a special travel cup with a sealable lid whereas others bring a regular cup from home or the office. Popular choices for a reusable cup include glass, ceramic and insulated stainless steel. You could even repurpose a glass jar with some rubber bands around the middle to serve as a hand protector.
The answer is none.
None of these can go in your recycling bin. Although these are a better alternative to plastic, they still belong in your general waste bin.
The answer is 980 grams.
On average, each Maroondah household throws away almost 1kg of plastic into their general waste bin each week. This equals 50kg each year! Join the Plastic Free July challenge and learn how you can begin to reduce and avoid plastics every day.
