Elections can be held on a public holiday or on a Sunday for the voters' convenience, but it's not a necessary requirement. If the day of an election isn't a holiday though, it is declared as one.
Voting by Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) has made the process simpler as one does not need to mark a ballot paper and put it in the ballot box. To vote, select your choice from the list of the parties and press the blue button next to it. The EVM will glow red and the VVPAT machine will generate a slip. There are both audio & visual indications for you to be sure that your vote has been recorded correctly. Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail is a machine joined to the EVM which helps you verify your vote. After voting, a printed slip with the serial no, name, and symbol of the candidate is seen for 7 secs. Then the printed slip falls in the sealed drop box of the VVPAT.
EVM’s can be opened only with a new ballot number ensuring that a person gets to vote only once. The program of EVMs cannot be changed and have a sealed security chip, therefore votes cannot be rigged and votes are restricted to 5 votes for every minute. This prevents fraud.
