Sup, brah! You spend more time in the water than on land (at least, you'd like to), and that means taking care of the ocean, lakes, rivers, and their surrounding habitats. The ocean contains an estimated 50-80% of life on Earth, as well as more than 90% of living space on the planet. Coral reefs, an ecosystem in shallow tropic waters, house over a million species of plants and animals, protect our coasts from storms and floods, and benefit the fishing, medical and tourism industries. Coral reefs and other ocean ecosystems are in danger due to plastic pollution, overfishing and rising ocean temperatures, but nonprofits like Coral Gardeners and the Pacific Marine Mammal Center are helping to protect our waters and all the life that depends on them.
Puppies! Sorry, I meant, PUPPIES!!! You probably say this more than the average activist. But animal shelters aren't just for pets. Marine mammal shelters, like the Marine Mammal Care Center, provide medical assistance and shelter up to 1,800 sick and injured seals and sea lions every year. These animals are given a second chance at survival they otherwise wouldn't have, and larger distressed mammals such as whales, dolphins and porpoises are given treatment out on the field. If you're an animal lover, the Marine Mammal Care Center and Pacific Marine Mammal Center may be charities you're interested in.
Chances are, you've been to a park (we hope). Parks have a huge range of benefits for health, pets, homeowners, and community as a whole. However, they are also a place to preserve the natural habitat of your town, clean the air, and cool the temperatures. Natural public spaces can improve the watershed of your area, limiting flooding and improving water quality. These are all focuses of the nonprofits North East Trees and Friends of the LA River, which create clean, natural, eco-friendly spaces in Los Angeles. If you're a Park Pal, these are the charities you might want to support!
All you need to make change is paint, cardboard, and 50-300 other activists. Change in the world is made by people like you, who love to inspire others and help them make change. You don't have a particular style of activism; helping others find their style is your style! For you, the charities North East Trees and the Pacific Marine Mammal Center may be good choices. Both have huge impacts on the communities that surround them, through both their direct missions as nonprofits and the education they provide to their communities.
