About this Diagnostic
This is the beta edition of this diagnostic, designed by Purpose Mindset. It is designed to help you begin to think about the role of work and learning in your life, not as a scientific assessment.
One Last Step
You likely have Transactional Mindset today, but you can develop a Purpose Mindset.
Today, you believe work is a necessary means to an end but not a way to find fulfillment and make an impact in your life. For you, work is largely about making money or proving yourself to other people to gain respect. You may be very good at your job, but it is rarely fulfilling and leaves you seeking meaning in other parts of your life.
The research shows that people who embrace meaningful relationships, making an impact, and growing at work are far more likely to be fulfilled and successful. Ironically, focusing on work with a Purpose Mindset is actually more likely to get you the recognition, raise or promotion.
Most of us were socialized by our parents, school, media and the workplace to develop the beliefs of Transactional Mindset. As a result you have likely to hold some of these beliefs:
- You shouldn't make friends at work.
- Your title and career define your worth.
- There are winners and losers in life.
- Nothing is free.
- It isn't possible to make a meaningful impact at work.
-
Only certain jobs and careers are fulfilling.
You can point to examples from your life that may appear to validate these beliefs. You may even associate them with your success or point to examples of how your challenges have been the result of straying from these beliefs. Long-term, however, your Transactional Mindset will likely get in the way of your success and well-being.
The research now clearly shows that these beliefs hold us back, but that doesn’t make it easy to change your perspective. It is scary to question your beliefs, much less change them. It takes time, patience and perseverance.
Recommendations to Grow to Level 2: Foundational Purpose Mindset
You have a set of beliefs that are preventing you from thriving and realizing your potential. You were likely socialized to hold these beliefs and may have had experiences that reinforced them. These have created stories in your head to protect yourself from getting hurt but are ultimately holding you back.
Self-reflection
-
Review the list of beliefs bulleted above. Which do you hold today?
-
What are the origins of these beliefs (experiences, advice, etc.)?
-
Reflect on the impact they are having on your life.
Activation
-
Be curious about the beliefs of other people. Ask them questions about their journey.
-
Practice doing small acts of service for people in your life and reflect on how they make you feel.
Habits
-
Regularly ask yourself why you are doing something and see if you can trace it to a transactional belief.
-
Take stock of the meaningful moments in your day and consider how to multiple them.
This is hard work and takes time, but it is the greatest investment you can make in yourself and your community. The research clearly shows that people with Purpose Mindset are more than 3 times more likely to be fulfilled at work and in their lives.
