Warren Buffett, widely considered the investing GOAT, is turning 92 today. To celebrate the Oracle of Omaha, we're quizzing our Hatchings on all things Buffett to see how much Buff stuff you know. Good luck!
He bought the house in 1958 and has lived in it for the past six decades. It is a simple five-bedroom, 2 ½ bathroom house that is currently worth 0.001% of his estimated wealth.
From age six, Buffett was selling packs of gum and used golf balls, collecting stamps and buffing cars. He also delivered the morning paper, which earned him about US$175 a month. (That's more than most teachers made during that time.)
It was a dying textile mill. Buffett managed to revive the business and use the cash flows from textile sales to fund other investments. He went on to shut the textile division in 1985 but continued using their name.
According to Forbes Magazine, Buffett is now worth an estimated US$118 billion, which ranks him as the 5th richest person in the world.
Obama awarded Buffett with the highest US civilian honor in 2011 for his philanthropic donations.
Berkshire previously invested around US$2.3 billion in the UK grocery retailer. However Buffett soured on the company in 2013 and sold all shares a year later, ultimately making an after-tax loss of US$444 million on the Tesco investment.
Although Charlie worked briefly at Buffett & Son, he didn’t meet the younger Buffett until years later. And while Charlie graduated magna cum laude at Harvard Law School, Buffett was rejected by Harvard Business School when he applied.
Buffett, who apparently drinks five cans of Coke daily, initiated Berkshire's position in the company in 1988. As of July 2022, Berkshire's 400 million Coca-Cola shares account for 7.9% of their portfolio, making it their third-largest investment after Apple and Bank of America.
Buffet learned the ukulele in an effort to woo a local Omaha lass. It didn't work (she already had a boyfriend) but he still plays the uke and is known to perform during meetings and conventions, sometimes with his mate Bill Gates singing along.
The pledge currently has 236 signatories from 28 countries with a combined net worth of more than US$1 trillion. For his part, Buffett has promised to donate over 99% of his wealth. So far he has given more than US$48 billion.
