Benztropine is an anticholinergic drug. In acute dystonic reactions give 1-2mg by slow IV injection. Works rapidly in 5 to 15minutes.
Most of the cardiovascular complications are dose dependant so they are most commonly seen in ED with overdoses.
The oral route is perferable if possible. If the patient already has an IV in place then using IV Droperidol initially is fine but if there is not an IV then IM is preferred.
< 65yr old patients can start with 10mg IM or IV of Droperidol then repeated 15min later--so a maximum of 20mg. Halve this for someone >65yrs age.
Remember Droperidol is contraindicated in patients with Parkinson's disease or Lewy Body dementia.
