La Belle Epoque
The period of about 1870 until the outbreak of World War I was a time in both Europe and America of optimism, cultural and technological invention, and artistic expression. In architecture, this roughly coincided with the proliferation of Italianate, Second Empire, and Queen Anne styles of buildings. Intricate sawn wood details adorn these houses, which often are topped with slate roofs with patterned shingles. Color, too, was no stranger to these homes, and it was used to advantage to highlight the many nooks and crannies created in their whimsical exteriors.
